"To date, Iran has fired rockets at Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan. What’s significant about these nations isn’t just that they’re American allies (although Qatar’s allegiance has always been...well, weird). What matters is that they are Sunni nations. To appreciate why this matters, you need to know a little bit about Iran’s specific brand of “Mahdi” Shia Islam. In most respects, Sunni and Shia Islam are the same; that is, the same prophet, Koran, ways of praying, and major holidays. However, the Mahdi or “Twelver” form adds an apocalyptic element. According to the Mahdists, true Islam descended through the line of Ali ibn Abi Talib (Mohamed’s cousin and son-in-law, so you’re already seeing the Islamic inbreeding), which was initially represented by a line of 12 “infallible” Imams, possessed of perfect divine knowledge, guidance, etc. Eleven of those twelve imams died around the 9th century. For Iran, the key figure is the “Twelfth Imam”: Mohamed al-Mahdi, whom Allah allegedly hid in 874 (when he was five) and again in 941 (when he was 69), via a divine process known as “occultation.” The Mahdists believe that this imam is still alive and will return at the End of Days to create a perfect world."
